Acetyl-L-carnitine is a product of the amino acid l-carnitine, a component naturally produced from the two amino acids lysine and methionine.
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a syncytial derivative of L-carnitine (ALC) transferase in the brain, liver, and kidneys. It causes the production of acetylcholine in a similar brain in its chemical structure, and may increase the activity of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the driving force (motivation), body movement, and functioning of the emotional and immune system. In addition, acetyl-l-carnitine stimulates cell-cell synthesis with proteins and phospholipids. This activity explains the unique functions of acetyl-carnitine: it has been effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's, clinical depression in the elderly, AIDS, diabetic neuropathy, ischemia, and various cognitive and memory problems among alcoholics as well as healthy people.
