This unique, artistic Kiddush cup is simply matchless. Its surface is engraved with several intricate designs. Most prominent is the ring of crosshatched “petals,” making this judaica goblet resemble a blossoming flower. The Kiddush cup is also embossed with the Hebrew phrase “boray p’ri hagafen,” which originates from the blessing over wine that is part of the Kiddush prayer.
On Shabbat and Yom Tov, prior to beginning the festive meals, Jewish families observe the ritual of Kiddush. Kiddush is a series of short blessings made over a glass of wine. The phrase on these goblets, “boray p’ri hagafen,” comes from the final blessing of Kiddush, and where G-d is thanked for providing us with the wine. Although wine is the traditional beverage for this blessing, kosher grape juice is a common, accepted non-alcoholic alternative, especially when children are participating in the Shabbat festivities.
