An original piece combining Israeli Judaica, Israeli art, and functionality

modern judaicaOne of the most cherished of traditions, the lighting of the Hanukkah candles is definitely the highlight of Hanukkah (also spelled Hannuka, and pronounced Chanukkah in Hebrew), leaving spinning dreidels (tops) and eating potato latkes (pancakes) far behind. Even the traditional exchange of Hanukkah gifts can’t compete with the moment when an entire family gathers together to light the Hanukkah menorah(sometimes spelled menora, and known as a Hanukkiah, or Chanukkah in Israel) and sing the traditional Hanukkah songs.

On the first night, one candle is lit, and on each of the following nights one candle is added until on the eighth and final night, eight candles shine together and bask in the glowing light. A ninth candle, the shamash, is used to light the others and then displayed with them.

Award-winning Israeli artisan, photographer, sculptor, silversmith, and goldsmith Shraga Landesman has masterfully crafted a Hanukkah menorah that combines complete practicality with the class and elegance of fine Israeli art and modern Israeli Judaica. This menorah, as well as many other of his works, features the image of a serene moment in nature. The menorah is shaped like a V supported by three pegs. Two Herons stand on one side of the V, searching for food. The Herons are carnivorous birds native to Israel and mentioned in the Bible (Leviticus 11:19), and generally, search for food by standing still and scanning the ground around them. The other side of the V contains eight holes to house the eight Hanukkah candles, while a ninth hole meant for the shamash is placed at the base of the V.

The contrast between the natural, serene setting created by the herons and the candles representing the unnatural miracle of Hanukkah gives much food for thought. This remarkable menorah is sure to be appreciated by all lovers of Israeli photography and art, and artistic fine Judaica.

Made of cast aluminum and measuring 26X15X13 cm (10.4  x 6 x 5.2 inch), this is the perfect Hanukkah gift, Bar mitzvah gift, Bat mitzvah gift, or anniversary gift.
